Postcard number 29 Main Street Cottage Grove circa 1913

No. 29 – Cottage Grove, Oregon. Circa 1913 – Main Street looking west. On the right, at the corner of Main and 7th Street,  a Drug Store occupies the Bookmine Building aka The Helena Saloon. Across 7th Street, the Woodard building, Harness & Shoe Shop, Bartel’s Meat Market and the Knickerbocker building. In the next block, at  6th Street, Hotel Oregon, a Restaurant and Griffin & Veatch Hardware.

After doing more research on this photograph, it is earlier than 1913. If you look closely there are piles of dirt on the south side of Main and on North 7th Street. The City was taking bids for paving Main Street in June of 1910. The sidewalks in the photo look very tall which would be due to the excavation on Main Street. Makes one wonder what may have been found under the wooden sidewalks during the preparations for concrete sidewalks. What do you think they may have found?
